From my personal experience there are several reasons:-1) When the mother does not realise that the puppies are her offsprings. First time mothers might be thinking %26quot;What are these things? They might hurt me... kill!!%26quot;. This happens especially if the puppies are not born naturally.
2) When the mother feels that predators are threatening her puppies, she may kill the puppies before the predators do.
3) It may happen by accident; such as the mother lying on top of the puppy and crushes the puppy, or accidently steps on the puppy.
Usually the mother will not kill her weak puppy which she feels will not survive. She%26#039;ll just abandon the weak puppy and not let it near the rest of the healthy puppies. She will also stop feeding it.
Some dogs don%26#039;t have have this natural instinct of how to take care of it%26#039;s litter. Then the owner will have to help. 100% 1 Vote

Nature took over. Momma knew something was wrong. Puppy wouldn%26#039;t have made it. So she took care of it.

It might of been that maybe you handled the pup, or showed too much of an interest by disturbing her to soon and she felt threatened.

It was proubly because somthing was wronge with it and she knew and didn%26#039;t want it to suffer. There was proubly somthing really wronge with it that you couldn%26#039;t see.
